Ken White was born in Swindon in 1943. He left school at the age of 15 and started working at the Great Western Railway in Swindon where his Father and Grandfather had been employed. His first job with Read more
the Railway company was as a rivet hotter but later took up a role as a signwriter.
Always having an interest in art Ken decided to enrol at his local art school. Taking evening classes White acheived an A-level pass in art. This was the catalyst for his decision to seek a career as an artist. He moved to London and became a commercial illustrator where he was involved in designing magazine and book covers. After a chance meeting with a young entrepreneur named Richard Branson, Ken was asked to paint a mural for a London recording studio. Richard Branson was so impressed that he paid White a retainer for the next 26 years as his personal mural artist. As a result Ken travelled all over the world, meeting many of the famous musicians and rock stars of the day, and creating murals at Virgin recording studios, mega-stores, hotels and in the Virgin airport lounges.
Over the years Ken White has created many murals which are now sited in a wide variety of locations all over the world. Perhaps the most recognised art work is Ken's painting of the “Scarlet Lady” which is featured on the nose of every Virgin aircraft. Although mural work has provided a living, Ken White has always been, first and foremost, a painter and is now recognised for his paintings and limited edition prints. He recreates print scenes of industrial landscapes and historic railway working scenes many which depict factory workers with their flat caps on their way to and from the factories. They are scenes which Ken remembers well from his childhood.
