Martin Leman's cats are often depicted sitting in decorative interiors, although popularity of these paintings has been a theme that has provided endless variations. 'Lisa' is obviously inspired by the famous painting 'Mona Lisa' by Leonardo da Vinci. Striking human looking features, matched with finely detailed whiskers and stripy fir of a cat, make this contemporary painting thought provoking and distinctive. As in many other Martin Leman paintings there is a strong element of humour. These elements of humour and surrealism do not detract from the sophisticated detail and fine brushwork throughout the painting.
