Lion's life was spent on and by the sea and this has influenced the subject content and colour pallet of her paintings. 'Port and Starboard' shows us a meeting between two fishing boats.
Talking about her art work Jane Lion says: "Light and weather influence whether my paintings become abstract or representational. I love colour. I paint how I have seen things on the day stretching a small pallet by experimenting with colour tones and values and building with layers of glazes and textured matt surfaces to create depth and contrast."
